We strive to provide your family, and ours, with grass fed, hormone, antibiotic free beef. Our holstein steers do NOT receive antibiotics in their feed. This is the common practice on many farms, nowadays. Instead we supplement them with probiotics and kelp year round. We deworm them naturally with diatomaceous earth. During the summer they graze on grass and are grass finished. Only when it's extremely cold and if we notice that they are losing condition then will we feed them about 5% grain in their ration. With the mild winter in 2017 we did not feed them any grain! Just as a comparison, beef raised in feedloots receive 50% or even up to 75% more grain in their rations! So 5% is almost nothing in comparison. 2019 UPDATE: We no longer feed our beef grain now during the winter. Our 4th cross Fleckvieh are a very hardy breed and do not need it. We love our Fleckvieh We also do not vaccinate our cattle. We have never done this. We have found that if you feed your cattle well that it really isn't necessary. We raise our own animals which also means we are not getting other animals bringing new bugs onto our farm. Our hormone, antibiotic free Holstein/Fleckvieh cross beef is a naturally lean meat. During the 2016 season, we were butchering F2 cross beef. In 2017 we started butchering our F3 cross beef. We are so amazed at how well our Fleckvieh cross beef do on pasture only! Best decision we ever made! Now, in 2018 we are getting very good feed back about our F3 or F4 cross beef. Our butcher told us the meat looks so good! We are got our first beef of the season back from the butcher and it looks gorgeous! 2018 Update: We have been breeding our Holstein dairy cows with a Bavarian Fleckvieh bull for 8 years now. (The brown bull in the picture) Bavarian Fleckvieh dairy cows are a naturally, healthy, low maintenance dairy cow that thrives on pasture. We were looking for a cow like this and this is what we found. An added bonus was that they have more of a beef build, which means larger steaks. We now have the F3 and F4 cross steers available for beef, which means larger steaks! UPDATE 2020: 10 YEARS! We are now into F4 crosses. This is great, because that means we definitely have the beef build, plus now we can call them Fleckvieh/ Holstein beef. Far more Fleckvieh than Holstein! All of our meat was safely and humanely slaughtered at a local processor in Southern Alberta for many years. (Check our update below, because we are now processing through a different processor) All animals are given a number which is matched with our animal number. Each animal is tracked through the whole system, so that we will receive our own animal back. This is very important to us because after we have raised it grass fed, antibiotic free and they have not received any added hormones, we want OUR animal back. They make sure that all animals are humanely treated from the moment they are unloaded throughout the whole process of being butchered. For each type of animal this might be different. For beef, it is important that they are immediately killed so they use a 22 to shoot it. Our beef is dry aged for a minimum of 14 days in a climate controlled cooler. UPDATE 2022: We have switched butchers this spring to Den Boon Meats. Our previous processor was getting extremely busy, and this processor is much closer to home. Our beef will be provincially inspected at White Lake Colony or at Pincher Meats. Den Boon Meats will pick it up the next day, and it will be dry aged for 14 days in their inspected facility. Then, our beef will be cut to either our or your specifications. They will brown paper wrap your cuts for you. If you wish, vacuum packing, then there will be an extra fee for that. Our beef will be tracked, so that we will be get our own beef back again. Our beef is available in bulk packages or by the individual cut. UPDATE 2023: Year 13 already! Time flies! We are changing how we are pricing our beef. Too many customers were not happy with getting 2 bills. One from us for the meat, and another one from the butcher for processing, so we are simplifying things. We hope! We will have one price, which includes processing. The only time you will need to pay an extra cost is when you order a side or a whole beef and you wish either sausages, patties, jerky or beef bacon etc, because there is an extra cost involved with that. |
